How do I find out whether I have the right to build a dock on my property?
Video Transcript
In order to build a dock, you must first determine whether or not you are a waterfront owner, that you hold riparian rights to the waterfront area in front of your property. Your property must touch the water. It doesn't have to overlap and you don't have to own the land beneath the water, but you must own to the shoreline. Beyond that, there's a number of steps to go through to determine through state regulation, some federal regulation and local regulation what the restrictions might be on the type of dock, the location of the dock, the configuration or shape of the dock that you would be able to place on your waterfront property.
